Despite claims that justice secretary Kenny MacAskill is trying to impose a twenty-first century Temperance Movement by way of legislative fiat, today it's reported that the SNP administration's first year spend on alcohol at hospitality events was almost double that of the previous Labour/Lib Dem Executive for the same period.
Meanwhile, it's also revealed that Jack McConnell's Executive - which also devoted significant time and resources to largely pointless liquor licensing reform - spent over £2,000 on booze at a hepatitis C conference - let's address one liver problem while setting a good example on cirrhosis, not!

Whilst I agree it's eye-opening in both cases (specially the latter), I'd have to say that one of the most tedious cocktail parties I ever attended was at one of the major hotels in Jeddah where we were hosting it for our major clients and shareholders - so obviously it was completely 'dry' although there was excellent food and marvellous freshly-squeezed fruit drinks. Very different from cocktail parties held there, for much the same types of guests, in private villas where we all enjoyed ourselves much more, naturally in a very civilised way. What I always did at such occasions was to have one G&T then tonic water from then on and no-one knew the difference, but the initial drink help make the whole hting much more pleasant.
I suppose politics and business are much the same in that regard, Bill; a little lubrication is often necessary to oil the wheels!
